He has since specialized in clean programming structures, design patterns, and parallel computing. Since then, he also picked up the hobby of reverse engineering various open source software to equip his employers and himself with new technologies. Jonathon has also worked for his employers and himself with new technologies. Jonathon has also worked for Rupert Howell, while developing Java applications for the UK's Offi ce for National Statistics, stumbled upon Open For Business and has been working with the framework ever since. John Haslam’s Illustrations of Madness, written in 1810, occupies a special place in psychiatric history, it was the first book-length account of one single psychiatric case written by a British psychiatrist. John Haslam, apothecary to London’s Bethlem Hospital, and a leading psychiatrist of the early-nineteenth century, details the case of James Tilly Matthews, who had been a patient in the hospital for some ten years. Matthews claimed he was sane, as did his friends and certain doctors. Haslam, on behalf of the Bethlem authorities, contended he was insane, and attempted to demonstrate this by presenting a detailed account of Matthew’s own delusional system, as far as possible in Matthew’s own words.

Originally published in 1988 as part of the Tavistock Classics in the History of Psychiatry series, Roy Porter’s Introduction to this facsimile reprint of an historic book goes beyond Haslam’s text to reveal the extraordinary psychiatric politics surrounding Matthew’s confinement and the court case it produced, leading up to Haslam’s dismissal from his post. I wish I'd save my money

The book: What a load of crap!Amazon: excellent as promised

awesome insight

I read this book in 1978 from cover to cover. For me, it clarified many early childhood experiences which likely caused pain and avoidance to situations which may or may not have been harmful. I feel it's important to have a chart which identifies parts of the "mind" and shows how sneezing (a bouncer) is sometimes just a distraction/avoidance to distract from an earlier painful emotional experience. This book if nothing else is a road map to enlightenment. I do not endorse Scientology; however, I believe L. Ron Hubbard made some significant contributions to society and this book (in my opinion) is as important as having a shovel if you wish to dig at some dirt.

I read this book as I walked up to a Scientology counter in Portsmouth city center when I was feeling rather down, depressed and lost in 2004. After an electrical experiment at the counter I was given the book Dianetics that I read quite quickly. It didn't seem too influential to me and didn't resonate with what I needed to become more secure. I found it resemble Freud's technique of psychoanalysis where the memories of the past influenced the memories of the present. The unit of memory in L. Ron Hubbard's approach that influences the present seems rather based on common sense in how I grew up and was educated in the 1980s but that was all that I found theoretically right but even that was not practical in terms of finding security in a confused time in my life. It was easily readable and the simplicity may attract some but after finding out about L. Ron Hubbard's past and his interest in Satanic doctrine and relationships I realized not only was I glad I did not conform to the rules of Dianetics but that they did not work for me and seemed even irrelevant or unusable in my life. I give Dianetics a two star grade as it remains a relevant book in history through the institution of Scientology even though I do not agree with their values but the book was relatively well written and had adequate context of its philosophy.

Poorly written pseudo-science with no credible evidence to back up L Ron Hubbard's claims. It is interesting on the level of the view of the creator of Scientology and his thoughts during the early 1950's. If you want to read it, purchase an inexpensive copy as you will want to see/return it.
